Supplements (Dietary)

Supplements

Before taking any supplement, it's a good idea to speak to your doctor or talk to a nutritional expert to discuss what supplements are right for you. It's particularly important to do this when you're taking other medications. Supplements, when taken in combination with other medications can cause adverse reactions and side effects.

What is a dietary supplement?

A dietary supplement must contain at least one FDA defined "dietary ingredient". These can include vitamins, minerals, herbs, amino acids, enzymes, metabolites, or extracts. Supplements are available in many different forms, such as pills, capsules powders and others.

General guidelines for those considering buying supplements

  • "All natural" does not necessarily mean the product is safe.

  • Look for brand names you're familiar with.

  • Understand any potential side effects and if you experience negative side effects, stop taking the supplement and see your doctor.

  • Know how the supplement is going to interact with other medicines. This includes prescription and over the counter medications.

What information is required on a dietary supplement label?

The FDA requires certain details be on the supplement label, including:

  • The Name of the product (the word “supplement” or a statement that the product is a supplement)

  • Quantity of contents

  • Name and place of business of manufacturer or distributor

  • Instructions for usage

Choosing supplements for weight loss

Selecting the right supplement for losing weight is important.  Assuming you're going to eat a healthful diet, there are only a few supplements that will be required, as you will be getting your essential nutrients from your foods. However, for those individuals that are following a specific diet that reduces certain foods or food groups, supplements could be needed to ensure you're getting adequate vitamins and nutrients.

We cannot tell you which supplements are right for you, as everyone is different and there are many variables involved in recommending a suitable and beneficial supplement. What we can suggest is that you see a health care provider before considering taking any supplements. Your doctor will be able to tell you what supplements are safe for you and may be suitable for your dietary needs.
